Wu Wei | Shibashi

Picture

Project

For this project I offered my services to my friend and Sensei Grandmaster TSU. He has devoted over half a century to mastering and teaching the art of Wu wuei.
Wu is the art of doing. where throgh allignemnt, breath, and teh smallest movement one is able to activate teh greatest force. Both his Shibashi, and Tai Chi forms are about alligning with natural forces and bodily motion. It is feeling .

He grounds his philosophy in physiology and modern physics and can often be overheard telling students to leave their brain at the door.

Grandmaster Tsu  and record his unique form of Wu Wei for current and future generations.

Wu Wei is the art of doing nothing. It is a mixture of Martial Art and Meditation, where by alligning with universal forces, the body begins to move by itself. Whilst this may seem an outlandish statement Gradnmaster Tsu teaches the principles, phlosophy, and science of this artform. and when one feels his , it is a deeper understand of the rleationship we have with out bodies and the universe around us.

Ideation & Development

looking for something orignal, authentic, traditional, classy, and timeless. This is a record of Master Tsu Teaching.

It was to create a tine for practice, and adhering to minimalistic tones. wanted to focus on Master Tsu teaching.

I used ai images.I created a style . wanted something that refernced old china. through colours we wanted something that lloked like a tradition, from the old into the new.

Grandmaster Tsu, Wu Wei - Qui Gong , and Tai chi. he has mastered this over 50 years. He himself was taughth this by his father. so we wanted to have some echo of tradition.

In finding teh style to generate images, it was looking for a consistent style of an envirment and people. Due to needing to create 19 shibashi trainings the decision was made to use AI, for time constraints. Which is interesting as a motion design, becuase the practical skills replaced with a form of art direction. At the stage of porduction AI models were far less consistent and sophisticated as newer ones, but i think our approach of havibg a definitive aesthetic, to not focus on what the technology can do, but rather attempt to direct it to create a from of consistencey worked.

We used a colour palette that references jade, but also a muted colour palette to suggest the age of dev,

For the final titles we ,oved towards- focusing on the action - to create something which referenced teh movements of the excercises. These were generated by AI. with the the instability of AI modelsat the time of production, this was an arduous task due to teh oddest of AI hallucinations. The videos may be seen below.

Anchored Setting.

In our early ideation phaze we can up with two reaaly strong signatures of teh Jade, and Lanscapes from south east asia. we looked Hokusai and many traditional chinese landscape drawing, Gongbi and Kwaidan from the wider region as starting points. we wanted to somehow use this to anchor master Tsu and the grahics into a setting which gave the space a form or container, but also dissapered as a backplate may. we used Ai to generate a seperate yet similar back plate foreaxch shibashi.we also used a shdow to guve weight

Navigation.

Despite slight difference between the backplates, we wanted people to know exactly where they were. So made a real feature of the excercise they were in.
The numbers and name appear on the title page, and then also throughout.

we wanted minimalism.

Illustration.

Picture
Grandmaster Tsu, wanted to show key position and drawing. so we opted for a clean minimal line drawing. Above are teh original concept drawings. these were advanced and the supported by illustration of profile images of the excercise to make it clear and show thow the smallest movement genearte teh body to move.
we opted against  using a grid system, we wanted to embrace the organic shapes of teh movement and place the illustrations around them.

Healing Cards.

Picture
Picture
Master Tsu has studied the body in different ways, physiological, mechanical , spiritual. alongside the generation of chi, each of the 18 Shibashi excercises/ forms has a healing effect on the body. I decided that this could be an important feature for learning to understand. to highlight. A card was made for each of the excercose

Subsection Card.

Picture
The training is divided into 2 section. Firtsly a turtoral with Grandmaster TSU explaining the shibashi, and then a 5-7min section where you may practice in time to master Tsu.

Outro Card.

This wonderful quote which serves as an outro title ; sums up master Tsu's philosophy and practice.
