The Bardo (2025)
The Bardo is one of those key pieces from whole other collectiosn emerged. It was a work that took close to 2 years to develop. Following on from work around shambala, I wanted to create a work around the space of The Bardo. The idea was to have two worlds observing the other.
I had to learn about fish tanks, to make them stable, to understand hwo to control the environment, and what would happen over time. how to prevent algae blooms,
and have various set up and run the dark water and understand how to keep teh water colour.
With live system one has to let go. Due to the window recieving day light, and then uv light at night, there was a potential for an algee bloom. a strong water filter, and an aieraotr were, but the intensity of light still led to an algoe bloom. The needed cleaning every few days, but I left the environment to develop. slowly a green carpet of green flully algae started to emerg and cover teh rocks and teh people, a display of patina, and teh struggle between the concrete jungles and nature. I'm always fascinated by road works. here we get to see the few feet of civilization we have built like a skin on hot milk, on the earth. It made me think of chernoble and how an abandoned area is reclaimed by wildlife and nature. plants work through and smash concrete. and how in histroy, the story of civilization sterching back 100,000s of years lies beneath us.
My daughter gives me my best ideas. originallt requested a fish tank, which then i had to look after,
Tending daily to fish, i started seeing this in relation to much of my earlier work- it was like observing a mini world, where i controlled the amount of food light, and kept ths world alive, At teh same Palestine was occuring. It was a steep learning curve of how to grow plants, sunstrate how to set this up. The work was to be displaced in the worst condition, a south facing shop window. so I stripped out all the plants and anything that could create nutirents in teh water. during the day it would function. at night the lamps and the tanlk lights lit the space, really bring the world to life. there were 3 shop windows, and i wante dto make them look like some form of department store display than art
linking this world to context. I had been workig with ideas of shambala and exits to higher planes, and i wante dto do a work about the space in betwen lives. The bardo is such one concept where we are elesewhere. reports of nda, and hypnosis also revela this.
The work is about

They have become a protection racket - and wars keep this industry alive, whilst basic health needs fall. With a hegemonic challenge from various parties, with isril and brics now fighting to become tehhegemeno, and biblical, quaranic and eschalotogical claims . we see another bralw. the wars have taken away any myth.
It poiints how societies are arranged. religion is disqualified redundified, but there are some important. Guru Nanak the founder of teh sikh religion. to serve other, help ithers. As a sign of his message that there is no kind of man, but one man. The dieties. These relate to a development of idols by the civilisation. They look upon teh various dieties that people worship, in trying to find some form of highter power. It is a case of not looking outside of your self teh path is inwards. which raises question which in our day we look to science for.
Our relationship of seeking other, is it a journey for meaning, and the brain becomes setlled when we can say yes that it, now i can omve alng and do something else.
this is an ongoing series and this si a strand of this project i hope to develop further.
