Digital Telepathy (NER 01) (2013).
Telepathy is reported to be the ability to obtain access to information from anothers mind. This ability (para citta ādi abhijñatā) is also expressed as an ability that one obtains by reaching the higher energy levels through meditation. Many of these reported abilities associated with mediatation, are being adopted through our Digital Technologies, and rather than giving us wider freedoms and deeper understanding our natures, they seem to be becoming incorporated as measures of subtle mass control.
For this project conducted at Queen Mary University of London, Funded by the EPRSC, I used a mobile
Electroencephalography headset which provided 16 channels of Raw EEG data. This data was processed using an offline algorthmic classifier which sorted the signal for its Arousal and Valence levels to determine a temporal morphing root emotional state, as registered in the brain.
As a stimulation source, I decided upon guaging subjective emotional responses to Artworks in their naturalistic settings. For Telepathy a signal response was recorded to Olafur Elliasson's Model for a Timeless Garden (2013) during its presentation at the Light Show, Hayward Gallery, London.
Each envelope of time (4 seconds) is compressed to single values representing Aroual and Valence levels, which then trigger the appropriate video and audio clips. Within the Video Imagery I wanted to reference how survielled as a society we are becoming, and further highlight how this is proposed to increase through the insertion of Body-Area-Networks (BAN) which take multi-modal readings of a body from moment to moment in real time.
(Special Thanks to the Hayward Gallery. London).
