Bleep (2017).
I moved to Sheffield just as the whole British Electronica thing exploded. That whole region including Manchester, Leeds, all the way down to Nottingham felt like it was the centre of the universe. It was an amazing era, where people found a way to invent their industries out of nothing, and share it with the world. Sheffield was where I found what I wanted to do, Music & Art.
From my very first paintings I always imagined sticking a Walkman and head phones on the wall instead of a name label. One song that looped would say far more than any title or text. When I began Animating, the synchronisation of Audio and visual events became incorporated into my fold of making. It’s a reflection of how phenomena's function in the real world.
Bleep is a homage to the sound of that City, and the remarkable experiences of youthful freedom at the time. I included some audio sample from a documentary of the day, which highlights the Conservative Party transitioning the UK towards hardcore capitalism. Somewhere in that documentary there is a famous quote from Maggie saying that "There is no such thing as a Society anymore".
It was the opposite of what I felt in those warehouse parties, sweaty clubs, and house parties.
